Addressing Under-Representation through Outreach and Research Access
AURORA is a grant scheme dedicated to supporting community-based outreach and public engagement activities that make cardiovascular research more inclusive.
We know that some groups are often left out of health research — including older adults in care settings, young people, women from diverse ethnic backgrounds and people living in deprived or rural areas.
AURORA is here to change that.
By supporting and funding community projects, AURORA helps build stronger relationships between research and the people it impacts the most. Our goal is to ensure every voice is represented in the science that shapes a healthier future for all.
What is the AURORA Fund for?
This fund supports creative, inclusive and locally relevant activities that raise awareness, improve understanding and encourage participation in cardiovascular research.
Activities might include:
- Community workshops or events
- Co-designed engagement sessions
- Digital outreach campaigns
- Educational activities in schools or care settings
We’re particularly interested in ideas that align with the NCRN’s mission and help reach groups who are currently underrepresented in cardiovascular research.
Who can apply?
We welcome interest from individuals and organisations based in Wales, including:
- NHS staff and teams
- Charities and social enterprises
- Community and patient groups
- Local authorities and schools
- Higher education institutions
You don’t need to be a researcher — just someone with a good idea and a commitment to making heart health research more inclusive.
What funding is available?
You can apply for up to £2,000 to cover direct costs such as venue hire, travel, accessibility support and materials. In exceptional cases, larger awards may be considered.
How to Apply
There’s no fixed deadline — applications are reviewed up to four times a year. Before applying, we encourage you to get in touch to discuss your idea and explore how it aligns with the AURORA initiative. The NCRN team are happy to advise and suggestion potential collaboration where appropriate.
